Discover the Saatse Museum Forest Trail!

Looking for a chance to spend time in nature, enjoy fresh air, and uncover the charm of Setomaa? Come and experience the Saatse Museum Forest Trail, where every step takes you deeper into the secrets of Setomaa’s forests!

This 800 meter trail offers an easy walk through nature, perfect for all ages. For an extra layer of excitement, try our game „Väigokõnõ Setomaa“ („Little Setomaa“)—it makes the hike even more engaging and adds a fun challenge! The trail usually takes just 15 minutes to complete, but if you decide to play the game, it’s worth setting aside more time—adventures take time, after all! The trail features a natural surface, adding an authentic touch to your hike. Enjoy the tranquility of the forest and the gentle embrace of nature with every step. The starting point is located to the left of the museum, across the parking lot, behind the bus stop sign. The endpoint awaits you at the Republic of Estonia's border post. While hiking, stay alert, as there are a few hazards along the way, such as a fire water source and fallen trees. The trail winds through a pine forest near the Estonia-Russia border. The view across the border is a unique experience, but be careful not to stray off the path.

Photos with the border posts can be taken in the yard of the Saatse Museum. In addition to the refreshing atmosphere of the pine forest, the trail offers information about the birds, trees, and border history of Setomaa. Observant hikers may also notice WWII-era trenches along the path. The trail ends in the yard of the Saatse Museum. If you wish to continue exploring after the Saatse Trail, head to Värska and discover the Põhjalaager (Northcamp) Hike starting from the Värska Visitor Center – General Reek’s House.
